The weather is warm, the sun is shining, the kids are out of school and it is travel season again! Every year we pack up our bags and families, spend thousands of dollars and trek thousands of miles to our favorite vacation spots. Those things are great! Sadly, we also hear about the constant indignities African-Americans must face while traveling.

Whether it is being followed in a store, being treated with disrespect or even denied service, many of us have had enough. African-Americans must take our $1.1 trillion buying power and go where we are wanted. Where are we wanted? Black owned businesses of course! Following the tradition of Victor Green’s The Negro Motorist Green Book, where to avoid indignities and possibly harm, African-American travelers needed his guide to segregated hotels, gas stations and other accommodations, here are links to Black owned travel and accommodation companies that will respect you and your hard-earned dollar.

Black Travel Magazines and Blogs

Want to travel, but you have no idea where to go? Try reading magazines and blogs made especially for us. A few of my favorites are Travel Noire, Soul of America, Black Girl Travel, and Path Finders. Take a look at my fellow Black Weblog Awards 2014 nominees, “I Luv 2 Globe Trot, The Sophisticated Life, Entrée to Black Paris, (im)migrating with a purpose and Haitist.”

Travel Agencies

Need someone to take care of everything while you enjoy your vacation? I darn sure do. Why not use a Black travel agent? They are the travel experts and have your interests at heart. For a list of Black “American Society of Travel Agents” go to www.travelsense.org.

Hotels

Need a hotel? Take a look at the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators and Developers list of Black owned hotels. The list includes over 140 Black-owned hotels in Africa, the Caribbean, and in the United States. The hotels prices range from budget friendly to luxury properties.

Bed and Breakfasts

Want something a bit cozier? Did you know there are Black owned bed an breakfasts in New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and other states? Here is a list of Black owned bed and breakfasts from the African American Association of Inn Keepers International.

Restaurants

Are you famished? I am. Eating at restaurants is my favorite part of traveling. It is not so good on my waistline. How about eating at some of the nation’s best Black owned restaurants. These restaurants range from local to global cuisine. For more articles on Black owned restaurants go to www.cuisinenoirmag.com.

Gas Stations

Many of us are road warriors and travel by car. If you are like my family and go on annual summer trips, driving is the best way to travel. We usually rent seven vans. We also bring plenty of home cooking and play nothing but gospel music in the car. If you are looking for a place to refresh, buy some gas or munches here is a list of Black-owned gas stations.

For a list of more Black owned restaurants, shopping centers and anything else to fulfill your travel needs please go the U.S. Black Chambers Inc.’s local Black chamber of commerce’s websites for a list of their local members and check out the links below.

African American Owned, operated and managed golf courses in the United States (African Americans Golfers Digest)

Black Owned Golf Courses (Black Golf Clubs)

Black owned wineries (Cuisine Noir)

National Association of Black Scuba Divers

Black Cruise Week

National African American RVer’s Association, Inc.

If a company can’t treat us with respect and dignity, they should not have our money and ruin our vacation. Black consumers deserve more than distrust, disrespect, and racism. We deserve to be treated like everyone else and you do too. If you know a Black business in the travel, accommodation and tourism industry leave a link below. The world is yours, take it. Have a great vacation!

Remember the only limit you have is the one you have placed on yourself. Think, know and be limitless.
