Everyone knows not one person of color, not even the damn seats got nominated for an Oscar this year. As a result, Jada Pinkett Smith dropped a video this week calling for a potential boycott of the Oscars. Check out the video here.

Well Janet Hubert aka Aunt Viv, who was Will Smith’s costar on The Fresh Prince of Belair and has been his 20 year arch nemesis called them out on their hypocrisy here.

Where were the Smiths when other Black actors were ignored by the Oscars? We recall Will Smith saying “racism is actually rare.” Is racism no longer rare because he believes it’s happening to him? Are the Smiths willing to lose their career on the behalf of other Black actors or is Ms. Hubert being petty? Who do you think is right? Are they both right? I truly believe this discussion is bigger than the entertainment industry. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

The only limit you have is the one you have placed on yourself. Think and be limitless.

I’m partial to JH’s perspective mostly because I was unaware that the Smiths owned a production company. With that kind of platform, why aren’t they producing media that places blacks–especially black women in positive multi-dimensional roles? You would think that with the resources that they have, they would have been able to employ black actresses and actors thereby supporting black thespians.

Secondly, JH touched on people being more concerned about paying their bills. Since the Smiths are financially secure, they are in a position to boycott this ceremony, but how many other blacks in Hollywood can actually afford to do this?

Lastly, JH does sound bitter, but then again, perhaps she has every right to be. It appears that she was blackballed and cheated out of a career.

Look I have real world issues to concern myself with and am really not all that focused of a bunch of actors who got dissed at an awards show. You don’t own it. You don’t control it and you really do’nt influence it.

    They Don’t Care.

People have said it more that a few times. Build your own. But the boycotters won’t and they will be right back for the next casting call in need of a black actor, grubbing for the crumbs the real powers in Hollywood toss on the floor. You don’t write the checks. You sign them for services rendered.

Of course these days black actors can be had from any part of the world. So do your little boycott if it makes you feel better for all the good it will do. Once again….

They Don’t Care. Neither do I.

I think they are simply using us. Like most black people in the entertainment industry, they only call on black people when they need to get their ass out of the fire. They use manipulation to make it like it’s a black issues and ‘we all need to band together against this racism’. But I know they see us as little drones that’ll flip for them if they ask us to and use excuse of racism to feign some kind of comradery between us that doesn’t exist, then they’ll go back to ignoring and or abusing black people in general (like most black rappers do), ready to use us again when they need it. It’s bullshit. They’re rich and fully capable of winning something on their own, let them figure out their own problems while we figure out ours. Please, lets all not buy into this; we are not they’re free mules.

I don’t think an Oscars boycott is effective. If anything should be boycotted it should be the movies. According to this article, minorities and women go to the movies the most but are the least represented:

Don’t support an industry that fails to represent you. Instead create your own content. I As for Janet Hubert, she’s had beef with Will Smith for years, and even if her allegations about his treatment of her on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air are true, he has more supporters than her and will always appear to be the bitter party which doesn’t help when she voices her opinion.

Boycotting the Oscars is just another case of black people throwing a tantrum because they did not get approval from their white masters. The Oscars were never intended to celebrate black achievement or diversity. Remember, the first film nominated by the Oscars was based a white terrorism of black people. Keep the amnesia going black people and keep degrading yourselves by begging for acceptance in to white culture. Grow a backbon, some pride and class and stop begging your captors and terrorize for crumbs.
