Let’s face it. The entertainment industry isn’t just about talent. It takes a heck of a marketing and P.R. team to have a non-singing entertainer like Ke$ha out sell a true singer like Jill Scott. I also know that females, unlike their male counter parts in the entertainment industry are not just judged by their talent but by their looks. But what’s really going on? Did these ladies have the same photographer? Is this a trend among photographers to make Black female stars unrecognizable? The photos below have them evolving into White women.
Honestly, it saddens me to even blog about this but I have kids. I have nieces and nephews that sing these singers songs and to my dismay they follow their favorite singer’s every move. I do not want to hear the line that some celebrities shouldn’t be role models. You are right. They shouldn’t. But the truth is as much as we don’t want to hear it celebrities are role models. Heck, even I wanted to be Micheal Jackson. My mom bought me the Michael Jackson lunch box, jacket, and glove. My coordinationnally (made up word) challenged behind even moon walked a couple of times lol. Don’t play like you don’t know. Most of us 1970’s-1980’s babies did. Finally, as a Black woman it bothers the heck out of me to see the erasure of Blackness in the media. Don’t believe me? Take a look below.
Brandy is GORGEOUS! She has beautiful Black skin. Why does this picture, as one person on Facebook put it, make her look like she had rolled around in a bucket of flour? The woman can SANG. She is a true artist. Her talent and longevity in a fickle industry is proof of it. She didn’t have to take pics like this? Is whitening a picture suppose to be avant garde? I call bull because it already has been done here and for totally honorable reasons here. Any who, who knew that a photographer could make a beautiful Black woman like Brandy look like Michael Jackson circa 2007? She looks so bright that this picture that it makes my eyes literally hurt.

Beyonce is this generations Diana Ross. She can do it all. She can sing, dance, act and do a heck of a lot of other things. She recently told everyone about her entire racial and ethnic makeup. In the controversial L’Oreal ad, Beyonce points out her African American, French, and Native American ancestry. So I guess in the picture below the photographer was trying to pay homage to her French side?? RRRRIIIGGGHHHTTT. Fyi, isn’t it also a coincidence that L’Oreal was found guilty of racial discrimination in France in 2007 and 2009?

Skin Bleaching
We all love to point to and publicly scold the celebrities who have allegedly engaged in skin bleaching or celebrities who have “unconsciously”((side eye)) promoted light skin. But think about it. We have never really engaged or confronted our friends and family that skin bleach. We also hardly ever hear the physical and yes mental reasons and consequences of skin bleaching.
The latest thing is knock women who relax their hair. You know the “hair wars.” Boring! I personally believe it is easy low hanging fruit. Men against relaxers can’t talk. When men stop wearing du-rags to lay down their hair then they can preach to black women about the using relaxers lol. But let’s be honest. When we cutoff our hair it will revert back to its natural state. Skin bleaching is much more different and far worse. It is the permenant alteration of the skin. The side effects of skin bleaching have been scientifically been proven. The side effects of skin bleaching are mercury poisoning, damage to your kidneys, skin, and nervous system and even worse death.

Why do People Skin Bleach?Why are people actively try to erase themselves by mimicking the look of those who enslaved or colonized their ancestors?
This is my opinion. Our skin color is a true marker of our original identity and there are folks who want to figuratively and literally want to erase themselves. There are millions of millions of people all over the world (this is not just a Black problem see China and India) who are engaging in the very sick and dangerous practice of skin bleaching because they hate themselves and/or believe that white skin equals a better quality of life. There are no if ands or buts about it. In most places skin bleaching is a by product of white supremacy, colonialism, and slavery. Bleachers have been conditioned to believe in their own racial inferiority. We’s physically free! The chains may be off but sadly bleachers are still mentally shackled to Master’s/Mister’s plantation.
I personally believe the image of whitened Black people reinforces a negative self image among Black folks . If you read the ad’s of these whitening creams their claims are to get rid of flaws and imperfections. That is exactly how colonized Black folks see their skin. They =have been told that their Black skin as flawed and imperfect and believe that their skin is flawed and imperfect. What these colonized folks forget is that the skin of Black people represents the first people to walk the earth. Since Black people are the first people to walk the earth aren’’t Black people a reflection of God’s image? These pictures and creams only serve to erase Black people and reinforce the false notion and lie of white supremacy.
What can you do?
I have personally decided to only support images and people that will uplift me. Whose side are you on? When will enough be enough? Will you do the same?

Sad. I remember when my cousin used one those creams and once she became a lighter shade she proceeded to destroy any picture she could find of her. I had to beat her up up because she tried to rip up my graduation pics. However whe you do try to confront people about it they get so defensive and tell you to mind your own business.
Those ads up there are sickening. I recently saw an Indian ad about lighting cream for vaginas. Yes, cuz dark genitals will disgust your man. SMH.
Wow on a VERY SERIOUS note, ladies one of the active ingredients is mercury. Not only is mercury very toxic, but studies have shown that mercury poisioning side effects involve dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. How do I know this is possibly true, my mother has Alzheimers and she used Dr. Palmer skin bleaching cream……smh….KNOWLEDGE is POWER…the things we allow ourselves to go through are unneccessary and preventable…All you have to do is love you the way the Almighty Creator made you….selah
Before I say I anything that you’re not going to like, I’d like to say that I agree with you in the sense that skin-bleaching is a wreckless and idiotic thing to do because it is a danger to any given person’s health that subjects themselves to it.
I also agree that there is no point in the act, itself. My skin color is white, and I have found that some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen are black or hispanic, and it would be foolish to try and change themselves. As a matter of fact, my wife is pure Puerto-Rican. God made all of us different for a reason, I would think. Beauty comes in all colors.

…I won’t deny to you that I am growing very weary of constantly seeing these types of things pour from misguided emotions. You seem like an intelligent woman. It’s very difficult for me to locate the basis for the issue of how slavery is still a problem in a country that does not endorse slavery, and hasn’t for over one-hundred years. In the interest of you not misinterpreting my tone, I’d like to say that I mean no offense, at all. I’m just making an effort to understand.
Is the issue the “alleged” racist, conservative Americans? Ma’am, I am member of the North Carolina Tea Party, and I have not met a single racist man or woman in any event that I have attended. In fact, I have met many black men and women. I’d also like to point out that the man who abolished slavery, such as it was, was a member of the Republican party; Mr. Lincoln. This carries me to my next question…
Is the issue with the KKK or other white supremacist groups? Frankly, I don’t blame you for that, because I don’t like them, either. They are evil, hateful, bigoted morons, and I dislike them just as much as I dislike the evil, hateful, bigoted morons in the black panther party. There is ALWAYS going to be racism and hatred between groups of people, but the thing that I tell myself everyday is that “I will not be a part of it. I’m too good for that nonsense.” I think you’ll find that if you do the same, and pass your personal judgement over the people you meet based on their personalities and not their skin color, you will be much happier.
Slavery is long gone, and all of those who held slaves are long gone with it. There are racists in every group of people. Don’t be one of them.
Besides, my ancestors have all of yours beat by miles, in the department of oppression. My entire family is dutch and polish, and during World War II, over six-million of MY people were kidnapped from their homes, herded into cattle train cars and taken to camps where they were experimented on, tortured, and brutally murdered in a very wide variety of ways, all because they were Jewish. Don’t even get me started on everything else…

Wow, looking at the Whitewashing of these Black female celebrities and pictures make me sick.
Black skin is so beautiful and I love my coco brown skin. I believe colorism is a byproduct of White Supremacy and that if you believe a light skin person looks better than a dark skin person than you are saying White people look better than Black people.
I well aware of whitewashing ever since I found out on Jessica Sanchez’s Twitter page that she dyed her hair a color that naturally occurs only in White women. If a woman of color dyes her hair blonde, which rarely naturally occurs in non-White women, that may come across as being whitewashed. Supporting the idea of women of color, especially Latinas and Asian women, going blonde is like supporting skin bleaching. I saw one comment on Jessica Sanchez’s Twitter page telling her to bleach her skin. I am strongly against the practice of skin bleaching and the practice of naturally black hair a color that naturally occurs only in White people. I am offended by posts supporting these practices. I despise people who support skin bleaching or blonde hair dyeing on women of color. They should have no right to judge women on their looks. When judging a woman by her looks, you must not declare her ugly just because she does not look Caucasian; that is racist. Anyone who makes posts supporting whitewashing should be banhammered.
Wow, I must say that I wasn’t aware of skin bleaching until a couple of weeks ago, and I was appalled! I thought “Why would anybody do that to themselves? And it’s so harmful for your skin… Whoever said black women aren’t beautiful because of their skin colour?”.
And that’s when I remembered the social pressure on white women to be tan at all times. Personally, I’m pretty much as white as it gets, my skin doesn’t tan much and I’m not a big fan of sunbathing. Women all over the world also engage in dangerous activities to achieve a “lovely, golden tone” (hello, tanning beds?), not to mention nonsense like spray tan, bronzers and creams with odd colouring agents that look totally fake and uneven.
So I came to realise that it’s not only non-Caucasian women who are pressured into changing their skin colour: it’s all of us women all over the world (and even some men, too). Dark women want to be lighter, light women want to be darker.
Why is it that we can’t accept people for what they look like instead of modifying everyone’s appearance to fit some unrealistic image of beauty?
My wife’s dark skin is the most beautiful thing in the world to me , so beautiful i moved from Britain to Detroit to have the honor of calling myself her husband. Its very very sad when anyone bleaches there skin but more so “celebrities”. This generation is lacking alot of good qualities.

I bleach my skin, when ever I get a pimple that stains and discolors my skin. I never knew that people did this to change their race? I swear to…Just wow, smh… I am going to stop using bleach immediately. I’m using Garnier.. I wish someone else would admit, that they’ve used the bleaches too, because I’m seeing all this, “I love my ebony skin” stuff. I wonder if anyone ever just used it and had a bad side effect?
The other thing is that, I don’t think Beyoncé bleaches her skin, she’s light skinned naturally and I tend to think she looks better without all the photo lightening, and so do the other beautiful women, and I never knew Beyoncé to be dark skinned anyway?. I think that the picture is bleached, but I don’t think Beyoncé is bleached. However, they bleached KIM Kardashian’s image as well. They manipulated Kim K’s image a few times and severely lightened it? It’s sad that they are doing this on very tanned Hispanic and Asian women as well?
White people often think that darker skinned women won’t sell, but if anything they sell MORE magazines in some cases.

I’m a professional retoucher, and if you see these girls up close they are their own natural color, and you are right, they are allowing the retouchers to bleach up their skin for a look that sells.
I do bleach my neck due to an outbreak of psoriasis I had last year which left my skin very dark in the neck and under the chin, I almost look like I’m wearing a beard. So I HAD to bleach those areas and they are getting better. However, I would never want to change my caramel color to be white, no siree that is a part of my appeal as a black woman, and that we come in all colors. Now I see this post as necessary, because I WAS staring to seriously feel dizzy and I THINK it was the bleaching making me feel dizzy? I would like to know if anyone else has ever bleached their skin deliberately and gotten these side effects?
I wonder if we could start a law suit together, because those bleaches ruin your skin with over use and maybe they are addictive for some people too? . My mom asked me to use lemon on the areas of discoloration. I was taught that bleach creams were for spot treatments, not to do your WHOLE body with!! Dang! Thank you for the one up.
After traveling and living in both Asia and Africa, I noticed that just about all skincare products available in this part of the world contained skin whitening. I also noticed that most commercials displayed showed white people in them and thus not only selling the product displayed but maybe also that to be successful you must be white.
