Why I don’t give a damn about people who don’t know who Missy Elliot is. (With Super Bowl Performance Video)

Last night at my family’s Super Bowl party, sans the alcohol and surrounded by non-football fans, I had the privilege of watching the half-time show. I have only watched two in the last 20 years. Those two were with Prince and the Bruno Mars person who reminds me of Morris Day. Well, during last night’s Super Bowl Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot performed.

I am not a fan of Perry. It is not her fault. I love singers with soul. I grew up in a Black American church so I heard better on Sundays without the half-time show scenes from the Teletubbies. I am a huge RnB, Rock and Freddie Mercury fan. That should tell you something. Katy Perry is a former Christian singer turned commercial pop singer who was pumped out of the over processed, canned and prepackaged GMO fields of the music industry. As repulsive as we may find generic McDonald’s type singers, we have to admit she sells a lot of records.

Missy is on iTunes top 100 songs chart!

Unlike many who have been complaining on the net, I can’t get mad or give a damn about people who say they have no clue who acclaimed writer, producer and rap legend with five straight platinum albums and five Grammys to match, Missy Elliot is.  You really can’t. Think about the kind of the content that is force-fed to them every day. It is mental junk food full of updates on what a talentless reality TV person ate, rape apologists and how to get an imaginary thigh gap. Think about the music they listen to where singers aren’t really singers because they need machines to help them sound like they can sing.

Understand, Katy Perry fans are unfamiliar with Missy because that is all they have been spoon fed. Mediocrity! They are the same types that think Eminem invented rap music, and Iggy Azalea is the greatest rapper of all time (which Eminem is one of the G.O.A.T). Some even thought Kanye ‘Freaking’ West discovered Paul McCartney. Really? Paul McCartney! Then they claimed they were just kidding after being called out on it. Yeah OK. So for me to wake up this morning and see Missy’s old albums moving up the charts was no surprise. For some in the American public it is like going from frozen burgers and fries to filet mignon. After all, they aren’t taught to think. They are taught to memorize and fill in scantron bubbles.

So don’t get mad at these No Child Left Behind babies. Forgive them for they know not what they do. Teach them and support real talent. Let them know it is OK to say no to canned goods and to try something fresh. In case you don’t know, Missy put on a show last night. Her songs from ten years ago still destroy the crap on the radio today. After she had finished all I had to say was “class dismissed.” Enjoy her Super Bowl Performance. I did.
